Willie's Famous 7 Iron & Putter

Willie Carter is famous around the New York & Virginia area for playing 9 or 18 holes with just one club; either a 7 iron or a putter. He was such an excellent player in his prime that his low handicap opponents would sand bag him. Willie decided to even the playing field, so he decided to start playing his matches with just his 7 iron. Well as history has proven, he was the best even using his 7 iron!

Some of the greatest golfers of all time like Dave Marr and Mike Souchak have called Willie the longest 7 iron hitter in the world. He would routinely hit that club 230 and 240 yards.

In all his years of match play with just his 7 iron, he only lost one match. It happened at the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York against Buddy Stewart who turned out to be a 6-time club champion there. Willie lost 1 down on the 18th hole, shooting a 79 to Buddy's 78 with a full set of clubs.

There are many other stories that can be told about him and his long hitting 7 iron including his trip around the Concord's Monster in New York, one of the longest golf courses in the world. From the back tees he broke 80 with his lone 7 iron.

Back in the "Good Old Days", Willie took just his 7 iron and shot a 3 under par 33 for nine holes in a match against a competitor at the Stony Ford Golf Course in the Town of Montgomery, New York.

If playing with just his 7 iron wasn't enough, he now plays with only his putter! That's right, a whole round of golf with just his putter. He has shot a 2 under par round of 34 with just that club on the back nine holes at the Town of Wallkill Golf Club in Middletown, New York.
